IPE Program Goals

To improve patient/client care and population health in the communities they serve, learners in CIPE’s* integrated, longitudinal interprofessional curriculum will:

  1. Communicate in a responsive and responsible manner that supports a team approach. (Communication)
  2. Apply collaborative leadership practices that support practice and team effectiveness. (Leadership & Teamwork Skills)
  3. Work in a patient/client-centered interprofessional team to create and maintain a climate of collaboration, mutual respect and trust. (Values/Ethics)
  4. Leverage the personal abilities & characteristics and professional expertise of each individual to optimize team function. (Roles & Responsibilities)

*The Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education curriculum involves seven educational programs: audiology, genetic counseling, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy and physical therapy.

The core curriculum will occur within a lifelong learning community (students, educators & practitioners) delivering services as a team, as articulated by the CIPE mission, vision, and values.

Our program focuses primarily on teamwork and leadership needed for interprofessional practice.

  • Interprofessional practice is defined as a team of health providers partnering with a patient/client/family/population in a participatory, collaborative and coordinated approach toward shared decision making around health and wellness. High functioning teams are foundational to interprofessional practice and the specific skills must be learned and practiced to achieve competency.
  • Leadership within an interprofessional team requires a unique and critical skillset that includes followership, advocacy and collaboration. While some content can be learned in individual professions, the competencies for interprofessional teamwork and leadership can only be achieved in meaningful IPE experiences.
  • The core curriculum will be complemented by enabling content and experiences within the IPE curriculum threads of each program and coordinated by the CIPE Curriculum & Assessment Committee.
